Bi-polar disorder is a serious illness
It used to be called manic-depressive illness or manic-depression. Children and adults with bi-polar disorder experience unusual mood changes that are much more powerful than those that most of us feel.
Understanding the symptoms
A person with this disorder sometimes feels excessively happy. They are much more energetic and active compared to others their age. On the other hand, they may feel extremely sad and are much less active than usual.
These mood swings are extreme. A child or adult experiencing them may have trouble sleeping. Their energy levels may change, and their thoughts can be unclear and confused.
Understanding the effects
Bi-polar disorder can cause one to perform poorly in school. It can also create intense problems with personal and work relationships. It’s particularly dangerous because it increases the change of self-injury or suicide.
